Is Avena Sativa an herbal aphrodisiac?

Avena Sativa is the scientific name for the common oat.  It has served many purposes for several hundred years.  It was originally grown in Northern Europe, in particular England.  The plant is fairly hardy and can grow in a variety of climates and conditions.

First, when eaten it is an excellent source of protein.  Depending on how it is processed, an oat can range from 17-37% protein.  If the seed is roasted it can be used as a coffee substitute.  The oat also serves several medicinal purposes.  When the oat is broken down into various formulas, it can act as an anti-inflammatory, help with various skin conditions, and lower cholesterol levels.

There have been numerous reports that the oat is also an aphrodisiac.  While, there is no scientific evidence that this is correct.  We do know that the oat has been used as such since the Middle Ages.
